Municipal Elections are held every four years in Nova Scotia and 2024 is an election year! Municipal Council confirmed that residents of the Municipality of Digby will be able to vote electronically, which means they can vote on the internet or by phone (cell or landline). Voting will be available for a 10-day period from October 10 at 8:30am through October 19, 7:00 p.m. You can vote anytime from anywhere during that time! There will be no paper ballots but voters who need help with electronic voting will be able to get it on the phone or in person.

Voters will be electing a Councillor in the District where they live. There are five districts in total and the terms for the Councillors are four years. Eligible residents will also be able to choose a member of the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial.

Here is why it’s important to vote!

Municipal Council is elected by the residents of the Municipality to make decisions about municipal services, by-laws, policies, and programs. These have a direct impact on people who live and work in the Municipality, and those who have businesses here. The cost for providing services is covered by the income from property taxes. Council approves the budget every year and sets the property tax rates.

The Municipality provides many programs and services, either directly or through third parties, including:

  • Recreation
  • Sewer
  • Waste Collection
  • Community Grants
  • Sidewalks
  • Public Transportation
  • Land Use Planning
  • Building & Development Services
  • Animal Control
  • Fire & Emergency Services

That’s not all! Council develops a Strategic Plan to pinpoint Key Strategic Priorities for the coming years. These include projects in the areas of accessibility, diversity, active transportation, green energy, economic development, high speed internet, and more.

Mark the e-voting dates of October 10th-19th in your calendar and watch for more information to come!
