The Municipality of Digby Equity and Anti-Racism Plan
What is this plan about?
The Municipality of Digby and Villages has created a plan that focuses on addressing systemic hate, inequity, and racism faced by underrepresented and underserved communities within our community. This plan aims to ensure that all residents feel welcome, respected, and valued.
Why is this plan important?
In 2022, Nova Scotia passed the Dismantling Racism and Hate Act, which focuses on addressing racism and discrimination. Municipalities and Villages were mandated by the province to develop and implement equity and anti-racism plans by April 1, 2025, and have them updated every three years. The Municipality of Digby is committed to supporting this effort by making local programs, services, and communication more equitable for all, including Indigenous peoples, African Nova Scotians, 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, seniors, and other underrepresented groups.
Key Focus Areas
The plan highlights three main priorities:
- Education & Training – Provide anti-racism and diversity training for Council, staff, and community members.
- More Inclusive Governance & Tools – Ensuring best practices and strategies with EDI considerations.
- Better Communication – Improve access to information by collaborating with groups, agencies, and neigboring municipalities.
What’s Next?
This plan will continue to evolve based on community feedback. The Municipality of Digby will track progress through regular assessments and discussions with residents. A record of concerns or comments will be kept so that this data can be considered when updating the plan every three years. The goal is to build a community where everyone feels welcome and has equal opportunities to succeed.
By working together, Digby aims to become a more inclusive and supportive place for all!
