By-Law
The Marketing and Promotions Levy By-Law establishes a tourism levy within the Municipality of the District of Digby to support tourism promotion and development.
Under this by-law, a 3% levy is applied to the purchase price of overnight accommodations, including hotels, motels, and other registered tourist accommodations. This levy is collected by accommodation operators at the time of purchase and remitted to the Municipality on a monthly basis.
The funds collected through the levy are dedicated exclusively to tourism marketing and promotional initiatives that help attract visitors and support the local economy. The use of these funds is guided by the Marketing and Promotions Levy Advisory Committee, which provides oversight and recommendations to ensure the funds are used effectively.
Accommodation operators are required to register with the Municipality, collect and remit the levy, and maintain appropriate records. Certain exemptions apply, such as long-term stays exceeding 30 consecutive days and accommodations provided for medical purposes.
This by-law supports the growth of tourism in the District of Digby by creating a sustainable funding source for destination marketing and promotion.
