He is motivated by helping people navigate real challenges, such as accessing housing, restoring services, or easing financial pressures for seniors, and by supporting local non-profit organizations in securing funding for impactful projects. A key goal of his work is to make the Municipality a place where professionals choose to settle, work, and raise their families.
He serves on Municipal Council and a wide range of committees and boards, including the Planning Advisory Committee (Chair), Regional Emergency Management Advisory Committee, Joint RCMP Advisory Board, Audit Committee, Executive Committee, By-Law and Policy Committee, Highway 101 Task Force, Digby Area Recreation Committee (Vice Chair), Digby Development Agency (Chair), Senior Safety Committee, Western Regional Enterprise Network Liaison and Oversight Committee (Chair), and the Digby Harbour Port Association.
Councillor Ross’ primary priorities include health care, economic development, recreation, and suitable housing. He is committed to attracting and retaining healthcare professionals and skilled workers, expanding recreational opportunities, and supporting housing initiatives. This includes advocating for continued funding for the Health Navigator position, identifying additional recreation spaces, and collaborating with developers and housing partners on infrastructure needs.
A lifelong resident of the municipality for 47 years, Matthew values the area’s scenic views, lakes, beaches, fishing ports, and world-famous tides. He is actively involved in community events and organizations such as Digby Scallop Days, Wharf Rat Rally, Lobster Bash, Digby East Fish and Game, the Digby Volunteer Awards, and Digby Elementary’s Breakfast with Santa.
Professionally, he has spent 20 years as a Communications Manager with Telus. His background in business technology, financial management, parliamentary procedure, and municipal governance, along with extensive experience working with the public and business community, has prepared him well for municipal leadership.
Matthew lives in District 2 on Haines Lake with his family and enjoys boating, fishing, carpentry, and DIY projects. He encourages residents to reach out with questions or concerns and remains committed to listening, collaboration, and working together to bring the community’s vision to life.
